With hundreds of photographers operating in Sydney's real estate market, choosing the right one for your listing isn't always straightforward. Price matters, but it's not the only variable turnaround time, consistency, communication, and understanding of the market all play a role in whether you walk away with a photography package you're genuinely proud of.
Here's a practical guide to evaluating your options.
Start with the Portfolio
The most important thing you can assess before booking is the photographer's work. Look at their portfolio and ask:
- Are the images bright and well-exposed? Good real estate photography should feel airy and inviting, not dark or flat.
- Is the composition natural and balanced, or do rooms look distorted??
- Are exterior shots well-timed and well-presented?
- Does the overall style suit your property type and target market?
Ask to see examples from properties similar to yours apartments if you're selling an apartment, family homes if that's your market. A photographer who excels at prestige waterfront properties may not be the best fit for a compact investment property, and vice versa.
Check for Consistency
A photographer who has one brilliant portfolio image and nine average ones is less useful than one whose work is consistently solid across every shot. Look at full galleries, not just the hero images. Are the secondary rooms such as bathrooms, laundries, smaller bedrooms treated with the same care as the main living spaces?
Inconsistency in a gallery is usually a sign of a shooter who's talented but not systematic which can be a problem when your listing has 25 rooms to cover.
Ask About Turnaround Time
In Sydney's fast-moving market, turnaround time matters. Most professional real estate photographers offer 24–48 hour delivery for edited images. Some offer same-day turnaround at a premium.
Ask specifically: what is the turnaround time from shoot to delivery? And what happens if there's a weather delay or reschedule?
Understand What's Included
Real estate photography packages vary significantly. Before comparing prices, make sure you're comparing like for like. Ask:
- How many edited images are included?
- Is basic editing brightness, contrast, window blend included, or charged separately?
- Is object removal and digital declutter included?
- Are floor plans, video, drone, or twilight shoots available, and at what additional cost?
- What is the licensing arrangement can you use the images for any purpose, or are there restrictions?
Some photographers include floor plans and basic digital declutter as standard. Others charge for each element separately. Know what you're getting before you commit.
Communication and Professionalism
The logistics of a real estate shoot involve at least three parties: the photographer, the agent, and the vendor. A photographer who is easy to communicate with, confirms appointments promptly, and handles rescheduling professionally makes your job significantly easier.
If a photographer takes days to respond to a quote request, consider how that might translate to the day of the shoot or the turnaround of edited images.
Value vs. Price
Real estate photography is not the place to cut corners. In a Sydney market where the difference between a well-marketed and poorly marketed listing can mean tens of thousands of dollars in sale price, investing in quality photography is almost always worthwhile.
That said, 'most expensive' doesn't automatically mean 'best'. Look for a photographer whose portfolio consistently delivers the standard you need, at a price that fits your campaign budget and factor in the full package value, not just the day rate.
Local Market Knowledge
A photographer who works regularly in Sydney's real estate market understands things that matter: how to handle north-facing apartments with intense morning light, when to time a shoot around the tides for a waterfront property, or how to make a terrace in a heritage suburb feel both authentic and appealing.
Local knowledge isn't always visible on a portfolio but it comes through in the results.
